If you are a single parent and you either have not started dating again or have dated but it has not gone well, then you are probably looking for some ideas. You have already figured out that being a dating parent is different from when you were single without kids.

In what follows, you will find some great ideas on how to date with children.

Another thing to remember is that your children will be watching you, and they will learn a lot about life as they watch you and how you handle this part of your life.

So what are some other tips for dating with children?

* Keep your children safe psychologically and physically – by keeping your dating world separate from your children. Do not introduce them to all of your dates. There are many reasons for this. First, if your children have a second parent (i.e. your ex), they are probably not interested in the thought of having another one. They may even feel threatened that the person you are dating is going to steal time away from them. Another reason is that you do not want your children to get too close with someone you do not intend to have a long-term relationship with, as this may cause feelings of loss for your children. This could be particularly traumatic if your children have lost a parent to death or a parent who walked out or was just never there for them.

* Be mindful of your children’s feelings – Sometimes, just using the term “friend” when referring to your new boyfriend or girlfriend is received much better by your children than the term “boyfriend” or “girlfriend” is. To children, “friend” is a much safer term that does not imply a serious relationship.

* Do not waste your time – by going out on drawn-out dates. This is especially true of the first time you meet someone new. You will know if you like someone after the first time you meet them, in order to decide if you want to go out on a longer date the next time. If lack of time is a huge factor for you, do not be afraid to look into dating over the internet. There are many other single parents doing this in order to meet other single parents.

* You will need to be accommodating – to your children’s schedules more than to your own. Dating should occur around your children’s schedules and not the other way around. You will also have to be ready to cancel a date at a moment’s notice if your kids are ill or need you unexpectedly.

To summarize, dating with children needs to take into account your children’s feelings and their schedules. They need to remain your top priority, and following some of the ideas listed above will help you to do that.
